This summer we decided to take our campers around the world! So today, we went to Australia. We started our day with play in the garden. When we came back inside, we sang the continents song and found Australia on the globe. We then heard some cultural stories about Australia. Our stories were about real people, places, and animals from Australia. The children learned about Uluru/Ayers Rock, artist Davida Allen, what homes in Australia could look like, and about the various biomes in Australia (did you know that there are four different biomes in Australia?). After our stories, it was time for snack. Our snack today was "Vegemite" (Sunbutter) on rice cakes with sliced bananas and kiwi from New Zealand. Then, it was time to do some art! Our first activity was to add "wool" to some sheep. Did you know that there are over 160 million sheep in Australia? We also got to feel a real Australian sheepskin. It was amazingly thick and soft! Our second project was to create Aboriginal dot art and we read a story about this sacred art form in Australia. Soon, it was time to get ready for water play in the garden. Before we knew it, it was already time for lunch. We finished off our fun day dancing to some music from Australia, complete with the sound of a didgeridoo! A fun time was had by all and we hope to see you next Wednesday. We'll be traveling to North America! We have a few spaces available if you would like to join the fun - register online here
